Rosa rugosa, commonly known as rugosa rose, beach rose, Japanese rose, or Ramanas rose, is a hardy, deciduous shrub native to eastern Asia, including northeastern China, Japan, Korea, and southeastern Siberia. It naturally grows along coastal areas, often forming dense thickets on sand dunes. The Latin term “rugosa” means “wrinkled,” referring to the deeply corrugated surface of the leaves. This species should not be confused with Rosa multiflora, which is sometimes also called “Japanese rose.”
Rosa rugosa is a suckering shrub that propagates easily from its roots, forming dense, spreading clumps typically 1–1.5 meters tall. Its stems are densely covered with numerous short, straight prickles measuring 3–10 mm. The leaves are pinnate, usually with 5–9 leaflets (most commonly 7), each 3–4 cm long with a distinctly wrinkled surface. The plant produces beautifully fragrant flowers, ranging from dark pink to white (on R. rugosa f. alba), 6–9 cm in diameter, with slightly wrinkled petals. Flowering occurs in spring, and in late summer and early autumn, the shrub often bears both flowers and large, round hips measuring 2–3 cm in diameter. In autumn, the leaves turn bright yellow before dropping.

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-drained, sandy to loamy soil; tolerant of poor and coastal soils
Watering: Moderate; drought-tolerant once established
Maintenance: Low maintenance; prune lightly to shape shrubs or remove dead wood
Uses: Ideal for coastal landscaping, roadside planting, hedges, and ornamental gardens
Resistance: Highly resistant to rose rust, black spot, and other common rose diseases; excellent for low-maintenance gardens
Rosa rugosa is a versatile, tough, and beautiful plant that combines ornamental value with practical uses. Its fragrant flowers, vibrant autumn foliage, and large, colorful hips make it a favorite among gardeners worldwide. Its salt tolerance and disease resistance make it especially suitable for challenging locations such as coastal gardens or roadside plantings where other roses may fail. Numerous cultivars have been selected for garden use, including ‘Fru Dagmar Hastrup’ (pink, single), ‘Pink Grootendorst’ (pink, semi-double), ‘Blanc Double de Coubert’ (white, double), and ‘Roseraie de L’Haÿ’ (pink, double), many of which are also valued as rootstocks for hybrid roses.
By adding Rosa rugosa to your garden, you bring in a hardy, fragrant, and visually striking shrub that will bloom year after year, offering flowers, hips, and natural resilience with minimal care. 🌿🌹
