Brussel Sprouts Long Island Herkules is a highly productive, early maturing cultivar of wild cabbage. Known for producing medium-sized, tasty sprouts, this variety provides a steady supply of delicious, firm sprouts through the autumn and into the winter months. The compact plant grows well even in cooler climates and thrives when harvested fresh, right from the garden.
Early Variety: Long Island Herkules sprouts are ready for harvest earlier than many other varieties.
Firm & Delicious: The sprouts have a firm texture and excellent taste, making them ideal for various culinary uses.
Mature Sprouts: The sprouts should be harvested when they are about the size of a large cherry and are firm to the touch. They grow from the bottom of the plant upward, ensuring a continuous harvest throughout the season.
Indoor Sowing:
Start seeds indoors in February or March if you want to transplant them outdoors later. This allows for a head start before moving the plants outside.
Planting depth: Sow seeds about 1 cm deep in a seed tray or small pots.
Germination temperature: Ensure a warm indoor environment (around 20°C) for better germination.
Outdoor Sowing:
If you're planting directly outdoors, sow the seeds in April or May when the risk of frost has passed.
Spacing: Space the seeds about 2–3 cm apart, ensuring they have enough room to grow. When seedlings are large enough, thin them out to 30 cm apart for optimal growth.
Soil Requirements:
Brussels sprouts prefer well-drained, rich, and slightly acidic soil. Adding organic compost or well-rotted manure to the soil will improve fertility and support healthy growth.
pH level: Ideally, soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0.
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during dry spells.
Sunlight: Brussel sprouts thrive in full sun but will tolerate light shade, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Fertilizing: Feed the plants with a balanced fertilizer (high in nitrogen) to promote healthy growth during the early stages.
Support: As the plants grow taller, they may need some support to prevent them from falling over. Use stakes or cages to keep them upright.
Timeframe: Sprouts typically mature from October to December. Harvest them when they are firm, about the size of a large cherry, and before they turn yellow.
Harvesting Method: To harvest, twist or cut the sprouts from the stalk, starting at the bottom and working your way to the top as they mature.
Pests: Keep an eye out for common pests like aphids, cabbage worms, and caterpillars. Use organic pest control methods or insecticidal soap if needed.
Diseases: Keep plants spaced well apart to ensure good air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal infections like downy mildew or black rot.
