The Cherry Kumato Black Tomato is a non-GMO hybrid variety, created through the careful cross of wild and domestic tomatoes (varieties SX387 and/or OLMECA) by the Swiss agricultural company Syngenta. Known for its deep color range—from dark green-brown to rich mahogany red—it offers a unique flavor profile at every stage of ripeness.
The variety was inspired by a discovery in the 1970s on the family farm of Luis Ortega in Almería, Spain. Syngenta spent 10 years perfecting this tomato through natural cross-breeding. Today, Kumato tomatoes are grown under strict quality regulations in Spain, France, Greece, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Turkey, and Canada.
