🌱 Love-In-A-Mist – Ragged Lady Flower Seeds (Nigella damascena)

🍃 Nigella damascena, commonly known as Love-In-A-Mist or Ragged Lady, is an annual flowering plant of the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Native to southern Europe, North Africa, and southwest Asia, it thrives on neglected, damp patches of land and has naturalized in northern Europe. The name damascena refers to Damascus, Syria. Its common name comes from the flower being nestled in a ring of finely divided, lacy bracts, giving a “misty” appearance. It is sometimes called “devil-in-the-bush.”
🌿 Botanical Characteristics:
Height: 20–50 cm (8–20 in)
Leaves: Pinnately divided, thread-like, alternate
Flowers: Bloom in early summer; commonly shades of blue but also white, pink, or pale purple; 5–25 colored sepals; petals minute and clawed at stamen base
Pistil: 4–5 carpels per compound pistil, each with an erect style
Fruit: Large inflated capsule composed of united follicles, each containing numerous seeds; matures to brown in late summer
Self-seeding: Often returns year after year in the same spot

A classic feature in English cottage gardens since Elizabethan times, Nigella damascena is admired for its ferny foliage, spiky blooms, and decorative seed heads. Widely cultivated in temperate regions, with numerous garden cultivars:
‘Miss Jekyll’ – blue flowers
‘Persian Jewels’ – mixed white, pink, lavender, blue
‘Persian Rose’ – pale pink
Other cultivars: ‘Albion’, ‘Blue Midget’, ‘Cambridge Blue’, ‘Mulberry Rose’, ‘Oxford Blue’, ‘Dwarf Moody Blue’ (~15 cm high)
