Ficus religiosa, also known as the Sacred Fig, Bo Tree, or Peepal Tree, is a revered species native to India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, China, and Indochina. Belonging to the Moraceae family (figs and mulberries), it holds deep spiritual, historical, and medicinal significance across Asia.
This majestic tree can grow up to 30 meters (98 ft) tall, with a trunk diameter of 3 meters (10 ft). Its heart-shaped leaves with long tapering tips are 10–17 cm long and 8–12 cm wide, fluttering gracefully in the wind. The small figs, 1–1.5 cm in diameter, ripen from green to deep purple.

The Sacred Fig is most famously associated with the Bodhi Tree under which Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, India. Every Bodhi tree must trace its lineage back to that original tree, symbolizing wisdom, peace, and spiritual awakening.
In Hinduism, the Sacred Fig is worshipped as a manifestation of the divine, and devotees often perform seven pradakshinas (circumambulations) around the tree while chanting “Vriksha Rajaya Namah” — meaning “Salutation to the King of Trees.” The tree is also believed to represent the source of the Sarasvati River in ancient texts like the Skanda Purana and Rigveda.
Across South and Southeast Asia, its massive trunk and heart-shaped canopy often host shrines and meditation spaces, where both Hindu ascetics and Buddhist monks meditate beneath its shade.
