Solanum pseudocapsicum, known as Jerusalem Cherry or Madeira Winter Cherry, is a perennial nightshade species grown mainly as a decorative houseplant 🌱. Native to Peru and Ecuador, these plants can survive frosts and cold weather in USDA zones up to 8 ❄️. The plants live up to 10 years, producing cherry-like fruit usually from the second year onward.
The fruit resembles small tomatoes in appearance and texture but is highly toxic ⚠️ due to solanocapsine, which may cause gastrointestinal problems if ingested. Pets, including dogs, cats, and some birds, are also at risk if they eat the fruit. Despite the toxicity, the plant is popular for its bright red berries and glossy green foliage, adding a festive or ornamental touch to homes and gardens 🌿.
