Sapindus saponaria, or wingleaf soapberry, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the Americas 🌏. Its fruits are golden, wrinkled when mature, and contain single black seeds. Leaves are pinnately compound, leathery, and 8–15 in. long 🌿. The tree can grow in clumps or alone, reaching 20–50 ft (6–15 m) in height, and thrives on woodland edges, prairies, and rocky hillsides 🌳.
The genus name “Sapindus” comes from Latin, meaning “Indian soap,” reflecting its soapy fruits traditionally used for cleaning 🧼. Flowers are small, white, in dense panicles, and bloom in spring or late autumn depending on the variety 🌸. The bark varies from gray-brown and hairy to reddish and scaly, while twigs and buds can be hairy or hairless.
🌱 Botanical Description
Wingleaf soapberry has alternate, pinnately compound leaves with 6–20 lanceolate leaflets. Fruits form in pyramidal clusters at branch tips, golden and translucent when ripe 🌿. The plant is drought-tolerant and ornamental, making it popular for landscaping.
