A small to medium-sized, evergreen tree, rarely to 30 m tall, with large, simple leaves and strange but beautiful, globose inflorescences followed by curiously pitted, yellow, edible fruits with sweet, white pulp reminiscent of flavor somewhat like a mushy apple and the texture of a pear.
Nauclea xanthoxylon is native to Western tropical Africa - Cote D'Ivoire, Congo, Central African Republic, and Sudan where it grows in wet, usually swampy areas. It adapts well to cultivation in tropical climates and starts producing fruits after only a few years. It is, however, essentially unknown in cultivation outside of Africa.
