✨ Chia (Salvia hispanica) is a species of flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala. Chia was cultivated by the Aztecs in pre-Columbian times and was considered as important as maize. Today, chia seeds are used in drinks, cereals, and as a superfood across the globe.
Etymology: The word “chia” comes from the Nahuatl word chian, meaning oily.
Plant Description: Annual herb, grows up to 1.75 m tall, opposite leaves 4–8 cm long, 3–5 cm wide. Flowers are purple or white, produced in spikes at the end of each stem. Hardy in USDA Zones 9–12.
Seeds: Small ovals, ~1 mm diameter, mottled colors (brown, gray, black, white). Seeds are hydrophilic, absorbing up to 12× their weight in water, forming a gel-like coating. Seeds contain 25–30% extractable oil, rich in α-linolenic acid (ω-3), 18% ω-6, 6% ω-9, 10% saturated fat.
Nutritional Value:
100 g of chia seeds provide high amounts of B vitamins (thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, folate) and minerals (calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc). Chia can be used in bread, smoothies, cereals, energy bars, yogurt, tortillas, or gelatin-like substitutes for eggs or oil in baking.
Health:
Preliminary studies suggest potential benefits for heart health, digestion, and nutrient supplementation. No known interactions with prescription drugs.
Cultivation:
Climate: Tropical and subtropical origins; short-day flowering plant. New cultivars now grow in temperate zones.
Cycle: 100–150 days depending on location, altitude, and cultivar.
Soil: Light to medium clay or sandy, well-drained, moderately fertile. Can tolerate mild drought and acidic soils.
Sowing: Seeds need moisture for germination; mature plants require well-drained soil. Traditional sowing involves seed broadcasting after soil preparation. Commercial rates: ~6 kg/ha with row spacing 0.7–0.8 m.
🌏 Distribution: Native to Mexico and Guatemala; also grown commercially in Bolivia, Argentina, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Australia, and parts of the United States.
